S. V. Narayanan, Ph.D., Principal Business Process Consultant
Dr. Narayanan is a leading business operations consultant specializing in the areas of customer-focused Information Technology operations planning and design, business process improvement/re-engineering, and market needs/opportunity evaluation.
His fifteen (15) years of consulting experience have involved work with organizations such as AT&T, Maybank (Malaysia), Mellon Bank, Union Bank of Switzerland and Crocker National Bank. Prior to his consulting career, Dr. Narayanan was affiliated with the University of Houston in teaching Business Quantitative Methods (Statistics and Operations Research).
Prior to joining Excom, Dr. Narayanan held various positions with AT&T Bell Laboratories in New Jersey, USA. During his tenure there, he developed methodologies and facilitated several AT&T organizations in applying these and other methodologies in their business improvement efforts. He led a team of managers in AT&T Consumer Products in drastically improving their Product Realization Process by developing methodologies for market needs evaluation and an integrated family of process measures using Quality Function Deployment and Statistical Process Control. He facilitated several teams of managers in various AT&T communication systems and services organizations to improve their business processes such as customer fulfillment, project tracking and reporting. Earlier, he had developed a mathematical model relating component failures and field repair process as well as an economic model for evaluating alternate design proposals incorporating failures, cost and time, both for communication systems.
While working for AT&T, he has developed the service provisioning process for ATM and Frame Relay Service.
Prior to this, he led a team in designing a re-engineered consumer lending operation for Maybank (Malaysia) to yield significant improvements in turn around time and reduction in inaccuracies and incompleteness. He also re-engineered a nation-wide remittance lockbox processing business for Mellon Bank. Benefits of this effort included annual cost savings of USD 9 million as well as a 20% reduction in error rate. Dr. Narayanan also facilitated the design and implementation of a process quality management and improvement scheme for the Foreign Exchange processes of Union Bank of Switzerland.
Dr. Narayanan holds a MBA and a Ph.D. in Business Administration, both from the University of Houston, Texas. His doctoral work involved Statistics, Operations Research and Finance. He also holds a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.
